* 27 July 10: IMPORTANT: 5 Years Limited Leave to Remain

Were you granted 5 years refugee leave in 2005?

If so, please read the important information below and pass on to your friends.

From August 2005, refugees were granted 5 years refugee leave rather than indefinite leave to remain (ILR). Asylum seekers granted humanitarian protection (HP) were given HP for a 5 year period.

In August 2010, leave to remain will expire for the first of these people.

It is VERY IMPORTANT that people do not wait for their leave to expire before making applications for further leave to remain or ILR.

They should apply for further leave to remain or ILR about a month before their leave expires.

Formed in October 2001 the ZA is a voluntary group. It began with a successful campaign to end the detention of Zimbabwean asylum seekers in prisons.

The ZA shares information with solicitors, human rights groups, parliamentarians, media and relevant agencies. We raise awareness of the plight of Zimbabwean asylum seekers and difficulties with the immigration process more generally.

Information is freely available to all through media, websites, mail-outs and meetings.

Beyond this, support includes:

  • Providing phone cards allowing contact with legal reps and family;
  • Covering travel costs to visit solicitors;
  • Putting people in touch as they are dispersed around the country;
  • Directing people in need to the right sources of help.

The Zimbabwe Association also:

  • acts as witnesses, experts, attend appeal hearings, and write supporting letters for our members
  • visits people in hostels, detention centres, and hospitals
  • links our members up with fellow Zimbabweans in the same area
  • has an office as a contact point
  • has formed a ZA choir
  • supports vigils and human rights campaigns
  • maintains close links with other Zimbabwean focused groups
